True2U celebrates deeper investment, wider impact on Cleveland youth

We are pleased to share the release of our report on the True2U mentoring program: Deeper Investment, Wider Impact: Year 3 In Review.

True2U is a volunteer mentoring program that supports 8th graders in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District as they explore their true selves and make their way along the path to college and career readiness. In small groups, the youth explore their interests and strengths, set goals, and connect these goals to the opportunities offered by the 35 high schools in the District’s portfolio.

The mentors work in teams during monthly in-school sessions, and have the satisfaction of helping shape—and being shaped by—the next generation of Cleveland’s leaders.

Data included in the report shows the program is effective in a number of ways, with significant impacts for youth in the areas of empowerment, constructive use of time, positive values, and, for the third year in a row—social competencies.

Social competencies include

  • Resolving conflicts
  • Expressing feelings
  • Accepting others
  • Being sensitive to others
  • Planning ahead
  • Building friendships
  • Resisting peer pressure, and
  • Avoiding unhealthy behaviors.

True2U phased in over three years so that, as of the 2017-2018 school year, all 8th graders in the District took part: 2,500 scholars in 66 schools, with the help of 400 mentors. A hard copy of the report can be requested by calling 216-658-1356 or sending an email to program associate Tiara Sargeant.
