Neighborhood Leadership Institute issued its first annual Community Priorities Survey in December 2021. Our organization is responding to the community’s input with new programming that is aligned with the Dimensions of Wellness.
Dear NLI Family,
As you may know, late last year we surveyed our Neighborhood Leadership Institute community contacts about what they felt were the most pressing issues/needs in the community within our four portfolios of work – Community Health, Neighborhood Leadership, Mentoring, and Youth Engagement. Overwhelmingly, the community responded that managing mental health was the number one priority and that providing programming around that topic would be helpful. Since then, a group of us have been working to develop a framework and outline a calendar of events for this year to focus on what the community has requested. We decided that we wanted to take a more holistic view of mental health, highlighting life issues that impact our mental/overall wellbeing. We’ve aligned these efforts with the 8 dimensions of wellness – physical, emotional, intellectual, occupational (or career), spiritual, environmental, financial, and social.
NLI staff is developing a calendar of events that will highlight one dimension of wellness each month beginning in May. During that time we will highlight our current programming that falls under that dimension and also potentially provide an additional event or two to address that dimension. We are excited to partner with you on this journey to wellness and hope that there is something in this calendar that will help you thrive.
The 8 Dimensions of Wellness
Wellness is caring for your mind, body, and soul. It is usually affected by your culture and your life experiences. It is self-defined and dynamic. Wellness is not just the absence of illness or stress – you can still strive for improved wellness even if you are not experiencing these challenges currently in your life. While all dimensions of wellness need your attention for you to truly flourish, there doesn’t have to be a perfect balance among all dimensions. Instead, the goal is to find what works best for you. The dimensions are interconnected, so you may notice that most topics (e.g. stress, finances, healthy relationships, substance use, etc.) influence multiple dimensions. Explore these dimensions with us and learn about tips and resources related to each dimension during NLI’s 2022 Wellness Initiative.
